Sunrise Certification Portfolio:
by Jim Fischer
The reason for a Sunrise portfolio is that PSIA requires a portfolio for certification. However, they allow each ski area to control the content of the portfolio. We have tried to reduce Sunrise's to identify and record the minimums while proving the candidate examples and explanations.
PSIA requires 25 hours of teaching since your last certification. We require a log that contains, at a minimum, 25 hours. We only require 12 hours of the level you are going for and also gives alternative ways of getting those 12 hours since we do not have a lot of upper level lessons (such as teaching Sunrise Instructor clinics).
PSIA requires two clinics, so our clinic log requires entry of when those two PSIA clinics were taken. We would like you include any other clinics attended, and when you got the other requirements done, but it is not required.
PSIA requires level-2 and level-3 candidates pass the written exam before they can take the ski & movement analysis sections, so we require you to enter the date of when you passed the exam.
PSIA will have you perform various ski maneuvers. The portfolio has explanations for the various maneuvers (provided by PSIA and reformatted for Sunrise) and then Gary wants to make sure that you can perform them. So, he wants you to have them checked by a level-3 certified instructor.
At the PSIA exam, you will watch a video of a skier and then be required to use the new Guest Centered Teaching(GCT) format for your movement analysis. Gary wants all Sunrise candidates to do a movement analysis for him (or me).
We decide to have candidates do 4 GCT writeups to make sure that they understand them. We have simplified that by allowing people to work together on them and use the same writeups. The portfolio contains descriptions on how to do it examples and how the scoring will be done at the exam.
